# How do I read my meter?

Find your meter in the options below and follow the instructions to take a reading. Don't forget to make a note of the date, and whether the reading is for gas or electricity.

## Reading your electricity meter

### Single rate electricity meter

Write down five numbers from left to right. Ignore any numbers in red or after a decimal point, you don't need those.

This electricity meter reading would be: **03284**

### Single rate digital electricity meter

Write down the five numbers from left to right ignoring any numbers after the decimal point or shown in red.

This electricity meter reading would be: **47629**

### Dial electricity meter

This type of meter can look a bit confusing compared to a digital meter, but don't let the dials put you off, it's still pretty straightforward:

Write down the numbers displayed on the first five dials. If the pointer is between two numbers, write down the number that the pointer has just passed, usually the lower of the two (except if the pointer is between 9 and 0, then you'd write down 9). Ignore the last dial marked 1/10, this will usually be in red.

This electricity meter reading would be: **50732**

### Two rate electricity meter

Write down five numbers from left to right, ignoring any numbers in red or after a decimal point.

Do this for each row to take two readings, don't forget to record which is your "Low" or night rate, and which is your "Normal" or day rate.

This electricity meter reading would be:

Low: **60030**

Normal: **83677**

### Two rate single-display digital electricity meter

If you have a two rate meter with only one digital display, you still need to record two readings, one for each rate.

Take your first reading as normal - write down five numbers from left to right, ignoring any numbers in red or after a decimal point.

Then, press the button on your meter to cycle through to see your other reading, and write that down in the same way.

This electricity meter reading would be:

Rate 1: **14837**

Rate 2: **02913**

## Reading your gas meter

### Metric gas meter

Write down five numbers from left to right, ignoring any numbers in red.

This gas meter would read: **04199**

### Digital metric gas meter

Write down five numbers from left to right. Ignore any numbers that are in red or come after a decimal point.

This gas meter would read: **00364**

### Imperial gas meter

For this type of meter, you only need to write down four numbers from left to right. Ignore any numbers that are in red or come after a decimal point.

This gas meter would read: **0328**

### Imperial dial gas meter

Write down the numbers displayed on the four dials. If a pointer is between two numbers, write down the number that the pointer has just passed, usually the lower of the two (unless the pointer is between 9 and 0, then write down 9).

This gas meter would read: **5073**
