A smart plug is a great addition to any connected home! It is a simple device that can be plugged into any domestic plug socket connecting it to WIFI and giving you more control over the electric appliances in your home.
What is a Smart Plug?
A smart plug is a device which allows you to switch appliances on and off remotely, or place them on a timer, by plugging into a standard home socket and connecting to the Wi-Fi. It enables you to remotely control electrical appliances such as lamps, fans or even your kettle, all from the comfort of your sofa.
Smart plugs can be a useful energy saving tool as some of our wasted energy comes from forgetting to turn appliances off at the plug.
Smart phone/tablet control
Most smart plugs are easy to set up using your smart phone or tablet. Simply download a free app (usually provided by the manufacturer) and go through the simple set up process. Once you’re connected you can access any appliances plugged into the outlet via the app. You can also use the app to set time schedules for the appliances to follow or use the away mode – this will automatically turn your devices on and off so that you appear to be home, whilst you’re away.
Most apps also have a timer mode which allows the user to turn an appliance on or off after certain time periods. So if you like to charge your mobile phone overnight, you can set the smart plug to turn off after a few hours so you don’t waste electricity whilst you sleep.
During the appliance set up, apps allow you to give each plug a name and combine several plugs into a group. You can choose an icon to represent the plug like lamps, heaters or even your own uploaded photo.
Some smart plugs can track your appliances power consumption, allowing you to analyse your devices in real-time. You can also view historical power consumption including weekly and monthly summaries. You can use this feature to monitor your energy consumption and possibly save money by managing the power usage of each appliance.
